Urban air
pollution is an urgent environmental and economic issue as well
as a public health concern. We’re committed to improving
air quality by providing emissions testing in the Lower Mainland
and by promoting the use of public transportation and car-pooling.
In British
Columbia, the Motor Vehicle Emissions Inspection and Maintenance
Program (aka "AirCare") has been operating since 1992. The program
was developed in partnership with the Ministry of Environment, Lands
and Parks (MELP) and the Greater Vancouver Regional District (GVRD) to address the
deteriorating air quality of the Lower Fraser Valley. The AirCare
program is administered by the Greater Vancouver Transportation Authority (TransLink). In
the Fraser Valley (Abbotsford and Chilliwack), TransLlink administers
the AirCare program on behalf of the
Insurance Corporation of British Columbia (ICBC).
With
AirCare total emissions from all vehicles have been reduced
by more than 30%.
Testing
Locations
Our program is credited with removing a total of 708,582 tonnes
of pollutants from the region's air shed in its first seven
years of operation. This year we have some new tests and procedures
that make it possible for all of us to breathe a little easier.
1991 and older vehicles recieve an annual ASM inspection for
$24. 1992 and newer vehicles recieve a more comprehensive transient
emissions inspection for $48 on a biennial basis. 1992 and newer
vehicles that cannot be tested on a dynamometer recieve an idle-only
test for $24. These vehicles will be on an annual inspection
cycle. All vehicles are charged $24 for a re-inspection.
AirCare hours of operation are Monday thru Saturday, 8:30 am
till 5:00pm (The Burnaby AirCare Inspection Centre is closed
on Saturday due to a local bylaw). There are twelve AirCare
Inspection Centres located throughout Greater Vancouver and
the Fraser Valley.
